Oral Hygiene

Mission Statement - We believe that oral hygiene is an essential part of any dental plan. To achieve optimal oral health requires a team effort between the patient, the dentist and the dental hygienist.

Our dental hygienist is a licensed dental practitioner whose focus is on preventive oral health care. Procedures provided include deep thorough cleans, radiographs, preventative fissure sealants, scaling and root planning. Adults and children benefit from routine dental hygiene visits.

Our hygienist is dedicated to educating you about oral health and teaching correct brushing and flossing techniques. This will also include the use of recommended oral hygiene products to suit the individual’s needs.

Your Hygiene Appointment

Our hygienist will initially perform a thorough assessment of your dental health. At each recall appointment, this will be monitored for progress.

The  hygiene appointment will consist of the following:

  • Evaluation of your general health
  • Examination of your teeth and gums
  • Meticulous cleaning and polishing of the teeth above and below gum level
  • Assessment and treatment recommendations for oral conditions such as gum disease (periodontitis) , bad breath (halitosis) and dry mouth (xerostomia)
  • Application of decay preventing agents such as calcium phosphate and fluoride
  • Taking of radiographs for diagnostic purposes such as decay detection
  • Instruction on correct brushing and flossing techniques and advice on appropriate oral hygiene products to suit the individual
  • Provision of a personalised oral hygiene program with recommended 3, 6 or 12-monthly visits.

Additional Information

Nothing is more important than your daily oral hygiene routine. Protecting your teeth against tooth decay and gum disease by brushing TWICE a day for 2 MINUTES is what is recommended. Also make sure you drink adequate water during the day and between meals for good general health. Patients should use floss and/or interproximal brushes to remove any food debris that may be between the teeth.

This may be a lot to remember to keep your teeth well maintained but it can help prevent problems such as bleeding gums, gum disease, tooth decay and even loss of teeth!
